Nigel writes: This had been planned to be our second evening ride of the year, but because our previous ride was cancelled (due to a combination of bad weather and leader injury) tonight turned out to be the first time we had ventured out in the evening in 2018. The weather was rather cold, with a chilling south-westerly breeze, but the sky was clear and we were able to enjoy the "supermoon" which remained visible for the whole visible.
Tonight's route was an evening ride classic: along the busway to St Ives, along the Thicket Path to Houghton and finally across the Ouse Meadows to Hemingford Abbots, where we stopped at the Axe and Compass just after 8pm. There were five rides out tonight, a satisfying turnout for the middle of winter.
Food and drink at The Axe and Compass, Hemingford Abbots
After food, drink and pleasant conversation we returned home, following local roads through Hemingford Grey to St Ives and then back along the busway to Cambridge. This is always one of our longest evening rides, and it was almost 10.30pm when we arrived back in Central Cambridge. I had cycled 61km (38 miles).
