CTC Cambridge, and our parent organisation Cycling UK, have joined the Cambridgeshire Sustainable Travel Alliance to add our voices to their campaign for better walking, cycling and public transport. The Cambridgeshire Sustainable Travel Alliance is an alliance of organisations that support the principle of a Sustainable Travel Zone for Cambridge and believe that the funding and opportunity presented by the Greater Cambridge Partnership offers a unique moment to reshape the city and wider county around the needs of its people.
The Greater Cambridge Partnership (a consortium of local councils) is proposing to invest in an improved bus network and in better cycling and walking infrastructure. They propose to fund these improvements by the introduction of a Sustainable Travel Zone which would include a daily road charge for most motor vehicles to travel within Cambridge city. The GCP's proposals are described in GCP Making Connections 2022, with additional details in their Consultation brochure (pdf).
CTC Cambridge encourages you to support the principle of the STZ by responding to the current Greater Cambridge Partnership consultation survey. The Cambridgeshire Sustainable Travel Alliance have published a 5-minute guide to help you shape your response. Camcycle has also published a guide to the GCP's proposals.
The "do nothing" option might seem tempting but that is a recipe for more gridlock on our roads over the next several years. The STZ is the preferred option and it should produce the traffic reduction that is needed. But the details matter and you can help to influence those details by responding to the survey.
